February is officially behind us which means Spring is just around the corner. Tackling Spring tasks before the April rain hits, is the best way to knock out seasonal must-do’s without having to deal with any pesky weather delays.
Up First, Tackle the Outside of the Home
Prepare for Outdoor Relaxation
With the promise of spring on the horizon, it’s time to refresh your outdoor living areas. Clear your patio of any debris that accumulated from winter. Give outdoor furnishings a once-over to check for necessary repairs or replacement cushions. If you’re a fire pit owner, prepare for the season by clearing it out and stocking up on firewood.
Re-Seal Openings in Windows and Doors
Winter’s harshness takes a toll on the seals around windows, doors, and trim, causing them to crack and peel in many cases. On a yearly basis, examine and re-seal any compromised caulking to fend off moisture and future repairs.
Check for Any Damage from Winter
Conduct a thorough inspection of your home’s exterior—checking for any winter-induced damage to the roof, siding, or foundation. You’ll want to keep an eye out for cracks or loose shingles that may cause future leaks.
Take a Look at Walkways and Driveways
If your hardscapes have fell victim to Michigan’s freeze and thaw cycles, fill in any cracks with the appropriate sealant for your specific surface. For extensive cracking, you may need to reach out to a professional.
Plan Your Garden
It’s never too early to start planning your garden or landscape projects. Look for inspiration in magazines, Instagram and Pinterest. Create a shopping list and outline your plans to keep yourself on track.
Next Up, the Inside of the Home
Lighten Up
Michiganders know better than to store away all the blankets just yet, but there are other ways to lighten up your home with fabrics and textures. Swap out thick rugs for those made of flat-weave or natural fibers. Update throw pillows with cheerful colors and/or lighter material.
Quick tip: using separate pillow inserts and covers makes for easy seasonal changes and saves on closet space.
Update the Entryway
Store away winter gear and make space for rain boots and umbrellas. A spring themed doormat or runner will provide a place to shake off spring’s puddles—and gives it a nice, cozy feel for the new season.
Adjust Ceiling Fan Settings
Fun fact – changing the direction of your ceiling fans can optimize your home’s comfort as seasons change. Set your fans to rotate counterclockwise during spring and summer for a cooling effect, and switch to clockwise in cooler months to evenly distribute warmth.
Now, it’s time to get to work.
With these tasks under your belt, you’ll be ready to jump right into the spring season and make the most of the gorgeous weather to come.
