Moving day is exciting. You’ve already closed on your home and put any stresses of the financial transaction behind you. Now it’s time to move in, organize and decorate your new living space. But before you begin making the home your own, you’ll need to actually move belongings from point A to B and unpack.
Here is a list of things you may not have thought of to help your move in day go smoothly, as well as the next few days while you unpack and settle in.
Cleaning Supplies: If you’re not having the home professionally cleaned prior to move in, the first thing you’ll want to do is get all your scrubbing done while the home is vacant, or at least before you have furnishings, appliances and other decor in the way. Also, don’t forget to bring some hand soap and hand towels, since your new home won’t have any available.
Seating: It can take awhile to unpack and you will want a place to sit and rest. If you know you won’t be unpacking your couch or chairs right away or if you’re waiting on new furniture to be delivered, bring some folding chairs. You’ll be happy you did and so will your guests.
Extension Cords: While you’re unpacking and navigating the new layout of your home you probably won’t have a permanent place for your lamps yet. Bringing extension cords will allow you to use lamps and appliances exactly where you need them, even if you aren’t next to an outlet.
Garbage Cans: Cleaning and unpacking will accumulate a lot of trash. Don’t forget trash bins for each room, or even a roll of large trash bags will do the trick.
Modem and Router: If you’ve already set up your internet service, get your modem and router hooked up right away. Now aren’t you glad you brought the extension cord?
Having internet access will help you if you need to google move in questions or take a break from unpacking.
Pack a Suitcase: Pack up some personal belongings as if you were going on a trip for a few days. Living out of a suitcase while you get unpacked isn’t ideal but it beats rummaging through boxes trying to find clothing and toiletries.
Shower Rod and Curtain: New homes often don’t have a rod, rings and curtain ready in every shower. Plan to at least hang up a curtain liner, considering you will want a fresh one of those in your new home anyway.
