Chances are you don’t want to spend a lot of your summer free time doing home maintenance. Here are some tasks you can check off quickly. You’ll thank yourself later, knowing you won’t have to deal with them during the harsh winter months.
Update Outdoor Lighting
With June’s longer days it doesn’t get dark until late evening, but when winter hits you’ll be glad your landscape lighting is ready to go. You can get creative with lighting too instead of just installing utilitarian fixtures.
Downlighting: Hang a spot light above the ground to highlight a hanging plant, object or area.
Uplighting: Highlight an object from below that you would like to have stand out such as a bird bath or statue.
Pathway Lighting: Install solar lights on stairs and railings or pathway lights along a walkway.
Power Wash and Seal Your Driveway
Michigan’s freeze and thaw cycles, sunlight, vehicles and even foot traffic all deteriorate the your driveway’s surface over time. So help protect it with a good power washing and sealant. In order for the sealer to stick, temperatures must be at least 50 degrees making the summer months an ideal time for this project.
If you’re unsure of how to use a power washer or apply sealant, there are many professionals that offer this service. And if you have any cracks in your concrete or asphalt you may want to consult with a contractor about addressing those issues first.
Seal Any Leaks
Check for any gaps around your home where air could be escaping and then seal them with caulk. This is a quick and easy maintenance project that can help save you serious money on utility bills. Here’s a list of places to check for issues:
- External entrances
- Attic access points
- Baseboards
- Chimneys
- Door seals
- Door/window frames
- Dryer vents
- Electrical outlets
- Fans/vents
- Fireplace damper
- Garage doors
- Outlet plates
- Phone/cable lines
- Weather stripping
- Window air conditioner units
Inspect Your Foundation
Check the perimeter of your home for any crumbling mortar, cracks and check your yard for any wet spots that stick around long after it rains. If you notice any problems, consult with a professional contractor before attempting a DIY project. You’ll want to address these issues now before they become an emergency later.
