It’s hard to believe its September already and Labor Day weekend is here. And with the current pandemic, traditional events such as Art Beats and Easts and The Romeo Peach Festival have been postponed until next year. But that doesn’t mean you and your family have to stay close to home this weekend.
As Michiganders, we are fortunate to live in a state with two peninsulas that have breathtaking lakes and plenty of fun landscapes to check off your list.
Here are 15 fun things to do in Michigan before summer comes to an end. If you feel like a road trip, there are several activities in the U.P. or there are some adventures closer to home that can be completed in a day trip.
Although most Michigan parks and facilities listed below are open to the public, be sure to contact them and find out if their hours have changed , or if there are any additional guidelines you should be aware of due to Covid-19.
1. Do the The “Dune Climb” at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park.
2. Take a copper mine tour in the U.P.
3. Spend the day at Mackinac Island or take a drive over the Mackinac Bridge – The Mighty Mac.
4. Go camping at one of the numerous state or private campgrounds.
5. Climb Castle Rock in St. Ignace
6. Kayak around Turnip Rock in Port Austin, then grab an ice cream downtown.
7. Take a hike in the the Porcupine Mountains, located in the U.P.
8. Visit one of the shipwreck museums found in both the lower and upper peninsulas.
9. Watch a Great Lakes freighter pass through the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie. Or stay closer to home and watch the freighters pass under the Blue Water Bridge from Port Huron.
10. Visit the Pictured Rocks by kayak, boat cruise or by foot. If you’re planning on taking a boat cruise, call ahead for tickets.
11. Visit one of the many waterfalls in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula such as Tahquamenon Falls.

12. Go fishing in one of the Great Lakes.
13. Visit one of Michigan’s Historic Lighthouses.
14. Visit one of Michigan’s numerous farmers markets.
15. Take a relaxed canoe trip down AuSable River in Grayling.
